Gotta Have That
Welcome
Welcome to SwirlPower.com, your place on the web to relate, respond and empower yourself and others as you join the fellowship of other biracial people from around the world. Here you can check our our array of approved products while checking out various topics that we discuss.
What "They" Say About Us
According to studies, failure to have a sense of identity- a common problem within the biracial population at an early age, leads to self destructive behavior such as alcohol and drug abuse, suidcide, alienation and academic problems. Because self identity primarily stems from a child's family relationship, this missing link often occurs when biracial children don't feel as though they fit into their family tree.
This is why it's so important for the multi-racial community to support itself and eachother. Without the continuous support, we become a statistic and we're more than a statistic.
Our Mission
The goal of Swirl Power is to uplift the biracial community, specicially young women, wo become confident and self-contained individuals with a sense of pride about their heritage.

Know Your Hair Type
Understanding your hair type helps you to avoid buying products with the best intentions, but lead to dissappointment. Determine the best feature that describes your hair from EACH category as it relates to Shape, Volume and Texture when in it's natural state.
Shape: how each individual hair naturally bends and twists creating coils, curls, kinks or waves
Coily-kinky- locks of hair are curled very tightly into an "O" shape with a diameter of 1/8' to 1/4".
Coily-curly-locks of hair have a defined "O" shape looped into a corkscrew affect with curly diameter approximately 3/8" and larger
Kinky-locks of hair have a zig-zag "Z" pattern without ever creating the "O" of coily hair. The bends are very small and frequent.
Straight- locks of hair have no bend at all.
Wavy-locks of hair have loose "S" shape without ever creating the shape of an "O." The bends tend to be infrequent, only occurring about every 1' or greater
Volume: number of hair strands per square inch
Thick-very dense amount of hair, cannot see scalp without parting hair. Cannot see through strands of hair.
Medium-midly dense amount of hair, can see through very few sections of hair.
Fine (thin)-lower number of hair on head, can see scalp when hair moves
Texture: the thinness of thickness of each individual hair strand
Course- hair strands are thick
Medium- hair strands are of medium thickness and fairly strong
Fine- hair strands are thin and fragile
**The best way of determining your hair's shape, volume and texture is by observing your hair when it is wet or has air dried.

Wearing Your Hair Naturally Curly, Wavy or Coily
1. Wash your hair with an alcohol-free shampoo that lathers well.
2. Apply a deep conditioner and detangle (with a wide tooth comb) your hair with the product still in your hair.
3. Rinse the deep conditioner out of your hair.
4. Instead of towel drying your hair, use your hands to ring out the excess water from your hair.
5. Section your hair in 4 parts and add about a quarter size amount of leave-in conditioner to each part. Be sure to do one section at a time, going from root to ends. Extra conditioner may be needed for the ends as they tend to dry first and get the most heat applied to it.
6. Bring all 4 sections together working out any extra water.
7. Scrunch the hair to allow curls to lock together.
8. Air dry, only teasing the hair once it's dry. For faster drying, use a diffuser on a low setting. The cool air drys without damaging the hair like hot air would typically do.
Wearing Your Hair Straight (For Relaxed or Natural Hair)
3. Rinse the deep conditioner out of your hair. At least once a month, apply the deep conditioner and sit under the dryer for 15-20 minutes before rinsing out.
4. Section your hair in 4 parts to begin the roller set. If you plan to keep your curls in once your hair is dry, mix setting lotion and water into a spray bottle and spray on the hair sections. The more setting lotion you use, the heavier and harder the curls will be. You can also just keep a spray bottle of water to wet hair that begins to dry out before being rolled.
5. Roller set your hair using medium to large plastic rollers. Be sure to comb through the wet hair and roll from the ends, up to the scalp in a clean roll. Natural hair will have some frizz to it when being rolled. However, you will be able to tame the frizz better once your hair is dry.
6. Sit under a dryer until your hair is dry. Depending on the thickness of your hair, the time can range from 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Do not leave the dryer until your hair is completely dry.
7. Remove the rollers. If you'd like to keep the curls, comb through with your fingers and go. If your hair is natural (with no chemicals), it may be necessary use a straightening iron or curling iron to smooth down the roots.
8. Depending on the texture you desire, use a hair serum or hair dressing cream (sometimes called a pressing cream) to coat your entire hair very lightly. A dime to quarter size should do.
9. Section your hair as you use a curling iron or ceramic straightening iron to style your hair.
10. For the straightest styles that last, wrap your hair at night using a paddle brush and cover tightly with a silk scarf. If your hair is very thick, use a hair net and tie tightly over the hair before covering with a scarf.
